Carlsbad is a great place for outdoor activities on the beach and inland with over 27 miles of hiking trails and a comprehensive plan by the city to expand trails, parks, and open space areas. Other recreational activities include swimming, snorkeling, diving, fishing, sun-bathing, wind- and kite-surfing, and children’s programs at city and county parks with great facilities for youth sports and adult teams. Carlsbad beaches have showers, lifeguards, and restrooms. Carlsbad State Beach and South Carlsbad State Beach offer swimming, surfing, scuba diving, fishing and beachcombing and are located at the foot of coastal bluffs south of the town. There’s always an outdoor activity and special events planned for young and old in Carlsbad.

Batiquitos Lagoon offers more than just a walk in the park for its visitors, both residents and tourists alike. The coastal wetland runs along the southern California coast, and is carefully protected and preserved by the community. There are nature trails throughout the lagoon that allow visitors to experience this natural environment, including the plants and animals that inhabit the area. Living in the ecosystem here are many endangered and rare species of birds, most of which have only begun to repopulate since efforts to preserve and restore the lagoon's natural tidal flows. The trail runs 2.5 miles roundtrip, and is fairly easy, allowing visitors to enjoy the surrounding beauty of the environment as well as the day. The lagoon looks out to the Pacific Ocean, offering an amazing landscape and scenic view. Batiquitos Lagoon is situated between Carlsbad Blvd., La Costa Ave., El Camino Real, La Costa Resort, and the Four Seasons Hotel.

Calavera Hills Community Park covers sixteen acres, including a community center, playing fields, and play areas for intense recreation or relaxation. There are many recreational classes instructed by the City Recreation Department, as well as both youth and adult sports teams/leagues. Contact: 760-602-4281 for more park information
Harding Community Center is right off the Interstate-5 freeway and has a variety of amenities and rooms that are suitable for business meetings, banquets, seminars, parties, and luncheons. There are 3 rooms total that will service anywhere from a small business meeting to a larger presentation, making this an ideal facility because of its location and services. The Auditorium holds a maximum capacity of 250 people, and is equipped with different lighting selections, an elevated stage, and restrooms. The Recreation Hall has a maximum capacity of 118 people, and offers hard wood floors, a patio area and a kitchen. The Multi-Purpose room has a maximum capacity of 20 people, making it ideal for small business meetings. Each room comes fully equipped with tables, chairs, sound equipment, and coffee urns. Laguna Riviera Park is right off El Camino Real at Kelly and Park Dr. and includes horseshoe pits, picnic and barbecue area, children's play area, lighted basketball and tennis courts, windscreens, and an open grass area. Contact: 760-602-4681 for more information
Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park covers 27 acres and is located at the intersection of Melrose and Carrillo way, in the Southeast Quadrant of the city. The ranch-park was once owned by the former “rancho” and actor Leo Carrillo and is a historical state landmark. The park embraces an early Spanish rancho environment that provides cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities for its visitors.
Magee Park and Heritage Hall are located at Beech Ave. and Garfield St. and cover 2.5 acres of natural beauty. The park has a rose garden, picnic and barbecue area, and shuffleboard courts. Maxton Brown Park is in downtown Carlsbad at 500 Laguna Dr. The park covers 1 acre and is near the Buena Vista Lagoon, giving it a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere that is perfect for picnic lunches or a relaxing afternoon. Poinsettia Community Park is currently the largest park in Carlsbad, being the first of three phases in what will encompass an area of 42 acres. Stagecoach Community Park covers 28 acres, offering something for everyone with its top-quality facilities and services throughout the area. The City Recreation Department offers many instructional classes at the park, as well as Youth and Adult Sports Teams/Leagues. The Swim Complex has a 24 yard by 25 meter pool, which includes two 1-meter diving boards, a 3-meter diving board, a shallow area and access ramp for young children, bleachers, and lots of deck area. In addition to the many parks and recreational sites and facilities in Carlsbad, there is also the option of heading right down to the beach and spending the afternoon, day, or even an overnight weekend at the Pacific Ocean. With almost year round perfect weather in this beach town, spending some time near the water is always a good way to both have fun and relax. Since Carlsbad is right on the Pacific Ocean coast line, there are many common, as well as “secret,” beach spots and locations where you can catch some waves, sunbathe, or just hang out by the water. These beach areas are always appreciated and preserved by the local Carlsbad community.
Carlsbad State Beach, commonly referred to as Tamarack State Beach is an ideal location for any beach-goer. The beach is 4 miles long, offering two jogging trails (along the bluffs or down on the beach) and plenty of space to sunbathe, barbecue, and have some fun. Tamarack State Beach is near the Carlsbad Village in downtown Carlsbad at the top of the bluffs, giving it east access for dining options.
South Carlsbad State Beach is more isolated than Tamarack State Beach , but is always open during the day. The beach includes campsites that overlook the beach from a cliff above, and is a great place to camp and spend time outdoors. There are not any facilities for day-use at this location and parking can be found on the near by streets. South Carlsbad State Beach is located at 7201 Carlsbad Blvd. in Carlsbad.
